Nasal Polyps

Nasal Polyps are small noncancerous growths that can occur in the lining of your sinuses. They are teardrop shaped and tend to hang like grapes on a vine from the tissue that have formed on. The growths are painless, and soft and occur more commonly in adults. They can affect anyone, and are usually caused by chronic inflammation, asthma, recurring infections, allergies, and certain immune disorders. These growths are harmless, and don’t cause much of a problem unless they growth to block your airway passages, and then they can lead to the breathing issues, and losing your sense of smell.

A lot of times a patient may not even be aware that they have nasal polyps as in most common cases you cannot see them from the outside of your body. However sometimes, due to their form, they can structurally trap mucus in your sinus cavities leading to further sinus infection problems as the mucus sits in these spaces and bacteria grows.

Nasal polyps can cause irritation and swelling in the lining of your nasal passageways and lead to chronic sinusitis. The symptoms associated with  with nasal polyps include: a runny nose, stuffiness, postnasal drip, loss of sense of smell, loss of sense of taste, headaches, pressure in your face or forehead, snoring at night, and nosebleeds. You should see a doctor if you have these types of symptoms that last more than a week to 10 days. If you are having trouble breathing you should take quick steps to see a doctor and treat in the interim until you are seen with over the counter antihistamines.
